Cosmetics & Gluten

Gluten related disorders are generally thought of as food-related issues -  many commonly used cosmetic brands also include gluten and wheat based ingredients in their formulations.

The use of gluten in cosmetics can be concerning for those with gluten sensitivities because there are over fifty commonly used gluten-containing and wheat derived ingredients in cosmetics that may not even use the words "gluten" or "wheat" in the ingredient name.

Since the true content of many cosmetics is unclear, hidden sources of gluten may represent an ongoing risk to those who continue to suffer from symptoms after they have eliminated gluten from their diet. Familiarity with gluten cosmetic ingredients is virtually non-existent which can cause a reaction to someone using  a gluten-laced lip product.

It's important as a consumer to look for a symbol of gluten-free certification backed by a reputable certifying body. This will guarantee that the products are free of gluten.
